Love is in the air...

Tis the season of love, valentines, and ...my birthday (Feb. 11th, yes Aquarian!). Gearing up for Valentine's Day, Zoe Boutique just got in a bunch of new art cosmetic bags that are going fast, and will soon be getting in a selection of Valentines that will be included free with every purchase in February til they run out! And don't forget to love yourself this month too - a little pampering never hurt anyone; as the consummate Aquarian, I admit it - I love baths like a 6 year old! Plus, the products are all 100% organic (not to mention the "white flower" scent is divine):

Speaking of love, one super fun project I completed last weekend was "live painting" at a wedding ceremony and reception of Marti Hoffer and Jessica Conaway. You can see all the watercolors I completed on-site here. (They even brought in a SHINE coffee truck for dessert!)

Also coming up in February is this exhibition of 4x6" postcard-sized original artwork to call attention to the grave issue of human trafficking. Organized by The Boston Initiative to Advance Human Rights (BITAHR) this exhibition will open it's display Feb. 2 at Villa Victoria Center for the Arts, then on Feb. 3 will go to the Modern Theater (also in Boston). The work will also be available for purchase online, and 100% of proceeds go towards BITAHR. Here's my submission:

Also did you know in Mexico, Valentine's Day is called "Dia del Amor y la Amistad" (which translates to "Day of Love and Friendship"? I like that, because it pretty much covers everyone! So from me and Frida: Happy Valentine's Day to friends, family and everyone I know!

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

I'm a fan! Several years ago I read Steig Larsson's trilogy, saw the Swedish version of the movie, and now am anxiously awaiting David Fincher's version. That being said, one of the things I love about books is your imagination builds the images for you... So here's my version of Lisbeth Salander and her tattoo (although admittedly I love the film teaser so much, it did influence my background). I imagined her tat to have a more eastern feel to it than the films depict, so this shows a Chinese dragon (the "deliverer of good fortune and master of authority"):

Now, we are also entering the "Year of the Dragon" come January 23rd. Going along with the fortuitous symbolism associated with the dragon we can assume this is a positive transition, and not only that - it reoccurs every 12th year. And yes that's right - we are entering 2012, so THIS Year of the Dragon should be an especially great year!

Blending Worlds at Wilde Meyer Gallery

Here's a peek at art I recently brought in to Wilde Meyer Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ. The gallery, which represents over 70 artists, has a unique approach to displaying art. Alongside all the paintings on the wall, the owners display handmade wooden furniture and stone statues they personally picked up in China. Since Chinese art and mythology has always been a great inspiration in my artwork, I love how the paintings blend with the surroundings here:

The addition of one of these statues to a room adds an overall meditative, balancing quality... a quality that I was going for with my "Cherry Blossom Dream" painting. Like a stone Buddha head or Foo Dog statues placed in an entrance way, the floating head in this painting gives a sense of overall protection and serenity:

Venus through the Ages

Victoria's Secret annual runway show this year proves the motif of "Venus" is a timeless one. Even the most well-known depiction by Sandro Botticelli is used on the cover of Adobe Creative Suite! In my 36" x 48 oil on canvas depiction Venus was Here, I honed in on the classical Greek myth of her birth from sea foam and elaborated it into a narrative that suggests a juxtaposition of destruction and beauty, of love lost and found.

Boogie Wonderland

I love this time of year so it's only natural that I'm making some art to go along with it! Here's a sneak peak of two new paintings going up soon at Zoe Boutique for their annual Holiday Spectacular, Dec. 17th, 6-9pm.

So it's no shock to those who know me that I'm slightly obsessed with sharks; they are fascinating creatures and I love the mystery they leave with their beautiful fossil teeth and prehistoric ancestory. A recent Great White sighting right off the coast of my hometown -Wilmington, NC- provides a perfect parallel to my new painting too (see actual phone cam footage here). But enough with discovery channel stuff; let's throw in a mermaid and some icebergs and then we have a real blend of surreal beauty and mystery frozen in time:

The flowers and retro jumpsuit pattern were the final additions. To make sure I got placement right, I took a quick pic of the painting so far with my phone cam, pulled it up in Photoshop and digitally placed flowers I pulled from old 70s fabric patterns where I wanted. Then I used this image as a guide while painting them on top of the background:

The Age of Aquarius

I'm so excited to share my ZODIAC series with everyone, now available as signed prints in my Etsy shop, and also as laptop/iphone covers, and canvases on Society6. My sun sign is Aquarius (which may be one of the reasons for so much water and mermaids in my artwork!), what's yours?

As news broke of Amy Winehouse's tragic death, I felt compelled to sketch a little tribute in my notebook... I picked a photo of her doing what she did best - following her passion and creativity through music. (side note: Amy is a "Virgo" sign, and here's an interesting article that cites her frenetic, creative energies to what is described as a Radical Virgo). Love her Betty-Paige-meets-Priscilla-Presley look:

I'm also working on a new body of work right now that is inspired by the allure and beauty within ancient folklore and Greek mythology. Here's a little peek at what's to come with this small one, "Mount Vesuvius," named for the lengthy volcanic and ash eruption that sealed secrets in the ancient city of Pompeii. Bees have been popping up in a few of these paintings as I've been thinking about how Einstein once said: “If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live. No more bees, no more pollination … no more men!” Read more in this article on global climate change (and maybe think twice about killing that pesky bee!). And I don't think I could live without honey, honey.

Ahoy! Pirates & Cowgirls

In the meantime, I've been working on some recent personal paintings close to my heart. People often ask about inspiration, which I find comes from everywhere... I recently watched the movie The Lovely Bones and was awe struck by the eerily beautiful "in between" world the main character is caught in. I suppose I also found the visual effects inspiring because some of the imagery parallels some of my current painting direction:

The tragedy of Japan's recent Tsunami left me dumbfounded and so saddened for all the people affected. As I was hearing the the news come in I began this painting below of a mermaid with her tears mixing in the ocean waves:

Doin' the Dip-dye

It's hard to miss the revival of the dip-dye hair trend, but this time around many are keeping it brunette on top - such as Pandora from TANK magazine spotted at London Fashion Week (illustrated here for Amelia's Magazine's LFW reviews):

Then there's my more whimsical take on it with this raccoon style (sketched this the day after watching Tim Burton's amazingly fantastical Alice in Wonderland... Curiouser and curiouser!):

Fashion Alert: Go Faux!

KTZ Faux Fur 2011 A/W for Amelia's Magazine

With both London and New York fashion weeks both wrapped up, one thing was distressingly apparent - the continued usage of real fur in fashion design. The main question is not why fur, but why true fur? Luxury in fashion is really now known by the fashion houses themselves - as a name/brand, as such designers (and fur-free advocate) Stella McCartney continues to demonstrate. Plus, there are plenty of amazing faux furs available now. At London Fashion Week, ethical fashion journalist Amelia Gregory (who just published an amazing book featuring ethical fashion designers as well) spotlighted particularly fantastic designers including the following faux-fur enthusiasts: at Carlotta Actis Barone models were strewn with faux seal fur (gorgeous brushed wool), KTZ's fabulous bold faux coats had me fooled at first and à la Disposition's sophisticated take used faux fur accents to compliment the models' softly teased up-dos.

Featured illustration on Ethical Heaven

New York Fashion week was full of fur this year, to the jaw-dropping disaproval of many. Tim Gunn (most easily recognized as the face alongside Heidi Klum in Project Runway) headlined PETA's party at NYFW, hosted by Stella McCartney's gorgeous boutique in the meat-packing district. The gruesome aspects of the fur industry are easy to dismiss if you choose to look the other way, but it doesn't change where the fur comes from (most often from repulsive "fur factories" where ethical treatment of animals is a moot point). Of this touchy subject within the industry, Tim Gunn elegantly states, “I respect the decisions people make. But I wanted them to know if they chose to use fur, where it came from.” Donna Karen, take note. See the full review here.

Not alone in my decision to choose to not wear real fur, Fuyume.net has a great article you will want to read if you're still wearing it (cat or dog lover? guess what, fur factories sometimes use cat and dog fur and "mask" it to sell and market as more exotic fur). Just in case you're still on the fence as far as buying real fur (a lot of people excuse them- selves by saying "well it's just a fur trim... not the whole coat!"), then consider the individual animal. My fashionista sister (an F.I.T. graduate herself) and I used to own a pet chinchilla in college, and he was the cutest pet (Casanova Supernova, called was "Nova" for short). Fellow illustrator Lesley Barnes (also a featured artist in Amelia's Compendium of Fashion Illustration) owned one of these adorable fur balls once too and reminded me how cute they are when they rolling around in their lava sand "baths" twice a week (that's how they keep the fur so soft!).

Splashes & Stripes and everything nice

Returning to the pencil for some light sketching in my ubiquitous moleskin, I find mixing it with some splashes of color (as I do in my fashion illustrations for Amelia's Magazine) proves more inspiring than the simplicity of a blank page.

I'm absolutely loving the fierce jeweled saber necklace glam jewelry queen Tatty Devine was so generous to gift to all the lucky good bag holders from the launch for Amelia's Compendium of Fashion Illustration (a fab book which you can buy here online, and soon to make it's way to Prophetik in L.A. too - exciting!).

Back to loving Tatty Devine, I'm enchanted by the S/S 2011 collection featuring a myriad of sparking hummingbirds! Here is a small sampling of the collection next to my Hummingbird print (which I sell here on Etsy).

There are many things the hummingbird can symbolize, depending on culture, origin of meaning, etc. but the symbolization I find most inspiring is "accomplishing that which seems impossible" - a motto which I try to live by!

How I've loved reading all the fashionista's blogs featuring highlights from attending the ACOFI launch party. Scrolling through StyleMyWardrobe blog I came across what looked to be a photo from the 1960s of a French party girl clasping her legs; I loved the tights and yellow shoes, so was inspired to sketch the above drawing.

Amelia's Magazine Book Launch party & more

What an amazing time I had in London, starting off with meeting an old friend in town on business, and staying with another friend generous enough to have me stay at her flat for the week! The book launch party for Amelia's Compendium of Fashion Illustration held at 123 Benthal Green Road, for which I have been involved with for the past 6 months (from a lovely 11-pg spread to cover design), was a fantastic kick-off to a whirlwind week of meeting loads of talented people, illustrating my head off, and cramming in some touristy-bits here and there.

The afternoon started off with scones and cake by confectioner extraordinaire Lily Vanilli, which were slightly distracting from doing live portraiture of event guests...

The vast tea selection, supplied by Pukka Herbs, was fabulous as well and I soon bumped into one of their reps - sweetheart Alexandra Haddow - who also happens to write for LDNfashion.

Francesca Salih of Forward PR was also so delightful to meet and speak with. Here she is flipping through the book and rocking chic leather leggings!

Happy to have arrived to the afternoon event early, I was able to catch-up with Gabby Young (for whom I illustrated her poster for this past Fall's UK tour).

Nyla Sammons and stylist Lupe Castro of EthicalHeaven (who donned vintage Emilio Pucci for the portrait) were both in attendance and proved to be absolutely divine models and inspiration for watercolor portraits as well!

Nyla even snapped a couple quick pics of me in progress, where I love how you can see my necklace and ring I'm wearing by jeweler Maggie Orli of Bahgsu Jewels who sells her amazing designs worldwide.

Goody bags of the evening were chock full of fantastic wares including wonderful Dr. Hauschka lotions, a sword-shaped Tatty Devine necklace which I'm loving, and more.

While downstairs tea & cakes and live illustration ran overtime, live performance by 6 Day Riot rocked out upstairs...

...as special guest DJs The Pipettes kept the crowd going as the night pursued:

Trends of the evening I couldn't help but notice were gray nail polish and red lips (loads of them!). Even Jessica Bumpus of Vogue sported a red pout of perfection.

All in all, the launch party for Amelia's Compendium of Fashion Illustration was, collectively, the most amazing mix of art, music and fashion. It's easy to see why into the evening it quickly became packed with top talents from all over. A very special thanks to all the other illustrators who I was so happy to finally meet with in person, and of course to Amelia Gregory herself who put together not only the amazing book but the wonderful event-filled evening!

The days' activities in my week long trip didn't save much time for sight-seeing, so I fit in some strolling around London in the evening - which is a sparkling beauty at night:

London calling!

Thanks to illustrating for Amelia's Magazine and entering the Open Design Brief, I have a lovely little spread in Amelia's Compendium of Fashion Illustration, "featuring the very best in ethical fashion design." The cover design is also by yours truly, which I had the pleasure of working on with Amelia herself!

Most of all, thanks to the support of friends, family, and all of my amazing art clients (especially one client in particular - you know who you are!) that I am able to make this wonderful trip. I'm quite excited to be flying over the Atlantic to be in London for the book's official launch party on January 28th and meeting everyone, including all of the other fabulous illustrators. Black and hot-pink ink will be accompanying me:

The limited edition Amelia's Compendium of Fashion Illustration cover is a gorgeous pearlised paper and the the interior is dressed to impress as well. It's chock full of not only amazing artwork by so many talents, but so many talented ethical designers too (Ute Decker & Anja Hynynen are among those that I personally illustrated).
An interview with each illustrator is also included with their illustrations, so here is a sneak peek with me interviewing myself:

AP: So have you ever been to London?
AA: Yes once when I graduated high school and my grandparents took me there with my cousin, Meggie. My grandpa has relatives there.
AP: Fantastic, so you've got a little British blood in you already!
AA: Yup!

AP: Well what would you say is your main inspiration for your illustrations and art in general?
AA: Ah, that's a tough one because inspiration is everywhere, but I do find the ethical fashion designers featured in Amelia's Compendium of Fashion Illustration have especially inspirational collections this year - so many unique twists and spins on classic looks taken to a level of true artistic construction.
AP: and other inspirations?
AA: Random characters, artists, and writers...

AP: Has working with Amelia's Magazine inspired you in other areas of your art?

AA: Yes definitely; although most of the fashion illustration I do is with watercolors, I also use oils on canvas and wood for my personal paintings such as "Juliet" pictured here. As you can see, she's quite fashionable.. well, for the Elizabethan age at least.

AP: Wait- I just noticed "Jem" in above speech bubble; who is that?

AA: JEM?! Only the most amazing 80s cartoon ever, and after illustrating Charlie le Mindu's fabulous pink poodle hair at London Fashion Week, I can't get Jem out of my mind.

AP: Right. So would you say you gained some personal knowledge and skill from working with the magazine?

AA: Well for one it's helped me refine my process from sketch to final, and it's also enabled me to better create illustrations under fashion-oriented art direction - such as this wallpaper design done for Zoe Boutique's twitter page:

AP: Lovely whimsy! And I do recall you perhaps having a sister that lives in New York City involved in the fashion world..?

AA: That's right, my sister Elaine graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC when we were living together there, so of course our living room was a perpetual disaster at all times - paint and fabric swatches everywhere!

AP: Did living together help you learn how to best market yourselves as creatives in a city that is known to thrive on it?

AA: We definitely helped each other and I continue to find Elaine and her designs quite inspiring. However now with the internet and all, you can really be a marketing guru from anywhere. It's certainly good to surround yourself with friends who are doing the same so you can exchange tips.

AP: So you have friends that you exchange tips with locally on a regular basis?

AA: Yes, mainly my friend Lissa who owns Zoe Boutique and Tanina Jackson who runs her own online store as well.

AP: Right, is there anything else you'd like to say while you're name-dropping?

Thumbelina is my latest 6"x 6" addition (oil & silver leaf on canvas) - I have always liked the story of this bitty girl and her many adventures. Lately, everywhere I am there seems to be a brown dove (not to be confused with pigeons) around the corner, on a telephone line, or hanging out on my patio... maybe it's just spring in the southwest, or maybe it's something else; their beautiful open eyes (enhanced by the 'beauty marks' they carry) seem to suggest the later to me! So I thought Thumbelina should have a beauty mark to match. This painting will be in Charmingwall's next 6x6 Opening on Friday May 7th, 6pm-8pm. Please call 212-206-8235 for further inquiry.

This 6"x6" oil and gold leaf painting is based on the Greek myth of 'Atlanta'... The only way Atlanta's father could get her to agree to marry was by having a race on the condition that the man who beat her could marry her. However, she was quite the skilled huntress & speedy runner at that, so that many men lost their lives (that was the gamble on their part). One fellow, Hippomenes, was very much in love with Atlanta and prayed to Aphrodite to help him in the race; she answered by giving him three golden apples. Each time Atlanta ran ahead of Hippomenes he threw one of the apples to distract her, and with this he was able to beat her, and thus marry her. Things later went awry and they were changed into lions... but hey, it is Greek mythology afterall, not Disney (although being a lion might not be so bad). For the full story go here.

Odyssey sketches

"The Odyssey" is the theme of my upcoming show at Charmingwall, NYC in October (reception Oct. 3rd). Here are some sketches of the paintings I'm working on. The above sketch is of Odysseus & Ino, as Odysseus leaves Calypso's island, Ino gives Odysseus a veil to protect him from the wrath of Posiedon (since he blinded his cyclops son already) with these instructions:

"Take off these clothes, and leave the raft to drift at the winds' will,
and then strike out and swim with your hands and make for a landfall
on the Phaikian country, where your escape is destined.
And here, take this veil, it is immortal, and fasten it under
your chest; and there is no need for you to die, nor to suffer.
But when with both your hands you have taken hold of the mainland,
untie the veil and throw it out in the wine-blue water
far from the land; and turn your face away as you do so."
